The specific passage that would eventually become Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of De Finibus. The original Latin reads, in part: "Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit…" — which translates roughly to: "There is no one who loves pain itself, who seeks after it, and wants to have it, simply because it is pain…" Cicero was arguing that people do not pursue suffering for its own sake, but sometimes endure it to achieve a greater good.

The leap from philosophical treatise to printer's dummy text happened in the 1500s, when an unknown typesetter scrambled and rearranged Cicero's words to create a type specimen sheet. By deliberately mangling the Latin, the typesetter produced text that looked like natural language — with realistic word lengths, letter frequencies, and sentence structures — but carried no distracting meaning. Note that this passage is not proper Latin. Over the centuries, words have been altered, removed, and injected with nonsensical additions. The phrase "Lorem ipsum" itself is a truncation — the original begins with "dolorem ipsum" ("pain itself"). Despite this, the text preserves enough of the natural letter-frequency distribution and word-length pattern of real language to serve its purpose flawlessly.
